State and Federal Democrats Stand Together Against Trump’s Reckless Agenda and To Support Vermont Families

Representative Becca Ballint addressed a news conference with state Democratic representatives.

Montpelier, VT - In response to the dangerous executive orders recently issued by President Donald Trump – orders that attack our state’s climate progress, Vermonters’ health care access, endanger Vermont’s immigrants, and threaten our economy – Vermont Democratic leadersmade clear their commitment to standing united against Trump’s reckless agenda.

“These executive orders represent an all-out assault on our state’s values,” said House Majority Leader Lori Houghton. “At a time when the cost of healthcare is skyrocketing, our president attempts to halt vital programs like Medicaid. At a time when our communities suffer from more frequent and devastating floods, our president pulls out of our climate commitments.”

“Here in Vermont, there is no freedom without unity. A threat to the safety, security and stability of any one of us is a threat to all of us. If children and seniors don’t get meals, workers and small businesses can’t catch a break,” or our systems of care begin to crumble, we all suffer, said Senate Majority Leader Kesha Ram Hinsdale. “We cannot let them win. We must counter the chaos and confusion with courage and community. ”

State Treasurer Mike Pieciak said: “Hardworking Vermonters pay their taxes, and in return, they’re owed the services the federal government has promised. This week, Donald Trump announced a brazen plan to steal money that belongs to Vermont taxpayers—money that keeps people fed, keeps people housed, and keeps people safe. My office is working on solutions to ensure Vermonters get the services they need while we fight for the federal funding they are owed."

Congresswoman Becca Balint reinforced the urgency of the moment: “This week, the Trump Administration attempted to use its power to override congressionally approved funds. Not only was this devastating and chaotic for working people, it’s blatantly unconstitutional. But Democrats stood with working people, and community organizations working on the ground to serve Vermonters and we pushed back. The Trump administration was forced to back down. Vermonters deserve better than this kind of chaos and confusion. We must continue to stand up to this attempted takeover of the federal government and stay vigilant. Because what we’ve seen from the White House this week is plainly undemocratic and ultimately it makes us less safe.”
