WATCH: AAUW's 20th Anniversary Candidate Forum Brings Voters Closer to Local Candidates
Bennington residents gathered on October 22 at the Firehouse on River Street to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the AAUW Candidate Forum, a respected platform that allows voters to engage directly with candidates for State Representative and State Senator positions. This biennial event has become a cornerstone in Bennington’s election season, offering a civil and informative alternative to the often high-stakes national campaigns.
The forum, first inaugurated in 2004 by moderator Paula McCann, was once again moderated by Kathy Wagenknecht, a former AAUW president. Wagenknecht presented questions crafted by a dedicated planning committee, addressing key issues for the town and county. Attendees had the opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of the candidates’ positions on topics critical to Bennington, with the event livestreamed on CAT-TV and GNAT for those unable to attend in person.
All candidates elected in the August 13 primary for State Representative in BEN-2 and BEN-5 districts and State Senator for Bennington County were invited, providing voters a comprehensive view across the political spectrum. The panel included incumbent representatives and newcomers:
State Representative (BEN-2): Anthony A. Cook (R), Timothy R. Corcoran II (D), and William (“Will”) Greer (D)
State Representative (BEN-5): Jim Carroll (D), Mary A. Morrissey (R), and Michael Nigro (D)
State Senator (Bennington County): Steve Berry (I), Seth Bongartz (D), Cynthia Browning (I), Joseph “Joe” Gervais (R), Rob Plunkett (D), and Lawrence “Spike” Whitmire (I)
The forum offered a crucial opportunity for voters to hear directly from candidates, especially amid recent changes in Bennington’s legislative districts following the 2022 reapportionment. This shift brought half of Pownal’s voters into BEN-5, joining the existing Bennington voters. Additionally, the Senate race marks a significant change, as no incumbent is running following Senator Brian Campion’s retirement announcement and the passing of Senator Dick Sears in June 2024.
After the moderated session, candidates mingled with attendees during a reception, fostering a closer, personal connection with the community. Suzanne Kirkpatrick, AAUW Bennington branch president, highlighted the forum’s impact: “We’re thrilled to bring this gathering to our town once again. It gives voters an invaluable perspective on who will represent their voices in Montpelier.”
With the November 5 election just around the corner, AAUW’s commitment to voter education was emphasized, reminding attendees and the wider community of the importance of civic engagement. As national AAUW advocates, the forum echoed the message: “The choices we make at the ballot box can open doors for generations to come.”
As the forum closed, AAUW encouraged everyone to take their newfound insights to the polls and participate in shaping the future of Bennington and Vermont.
